When working with adolescents and preteens with eating disorders, I use Family-Based Treatment, the evidence-based gold standard of treatment for this age group. Studies continue to show this method to be twice as effective in treating anorexia as typical individual or family therapy. When a child or teen has anorexia or bulimia, it is a crisis and a potentially life threatening situation. What parents need is information and concrete guidance in helping their child recover as quickly as possible. My role in Family- Based Treatment is to provide the support, encouragement, and information parents need as they respond to their child’s health crisis. This guidance is rooted in experience and extensive training and supervision with leaders at University of California at San Diego Eating Disorders Center for Treatment and Research.
