There’s a lot of confusion these days about what “counts” as trauma

Many people are reluctant to call overwhelming experiences they have endured “traumatic.”

The truth is that WHAT happened is not nearly as important as HOW it affected you.

Sometimes people who are impacted by trauma have flashbacks and nightmares like we see on TV. That is not the only way it shows up, though. Unprocessed trauma (overwhelming life experiences) can result in:

  • Difficulty feeling safe, even when you rationally know you are
  • Difficulty feeling and expressing a full range of emotions
  • Feeling shame and blaming yourself for things that happened to you
  • Feeling disconnected from life and from others
  • Feeling on edge or irritable or being easily angered
  • Chronic depression, low energy, or high anxiety

You might be surprised to learn that treatment for trauma does not have to involve figuring out exactly what happened, or reliving or retelling  a painful story. The point is not for you or me to understand the details; the point is for you to feel better!

Of course, if you choose to share your experiences, I am ready to listen. In addition, we will use gentle, non-touching body-based approaches  which allow you to  discover from within yourself what you need to get unstuck. Your brain and body will begin to learn that what happened is truly in the past, so that  you can experience life in with more joy and less fear.

The trauma work I did with Carolyn  left me well equipped  to handle life’s challenges. Our work helped me begin to develop healthy boundaries and provided me with hope.
